Abbaye aux Hommes

14000 CAEN

The construction of the Men's Abbey began in 1066 and is consistent with that of the Abbaye aux Dames. Begun in Romanesque style, it will be completed in the thirteenth century in Gothic style.

Consecrated in 1077, William the Conqueror had desired to recover the benevolence of the Pope who would not recognize the marriage of William with his distant cousin, Princess of Flanders, Matilda.

This harmonious blend and this learned assembly of different styles of construction and restoration including the seventeenth, make this building a monument of grandeur and elegance.

Now houses the Town Hall of Caen, the convent buildings were a school until 1965.

One can enjoy beautiful woodwork but also the eighteenth chapter, the cloister, the main staircase ... At the heart of this complex, the church of Saint-Etienne where the remains of the Duke-King and the choir is the first Norman Gothic choir.

The front commands admiration for its simplicity and grace of his tricks of the XI. You will love the architectural and strength that emerges ...
