The abbey church Saint-Amand-Coly is recognized as one of the most beautiful churches of Perigord, in the heart of the Dordogne, north of Sarlat ...
It was part of a powerful and prosperous Augustinian abbey, now defunct, created in the seventh by St. Amand, evangelist of Flanders.
Appearing out of the hillside, the old abbey imposes its beautiful architecture and the inevitable feeling of dominating the village! The present building dates from the twelfth century, largely rebuilt in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
From the start, visitors are fascinated by this amazing and simple bell tower and its immense vaulted arch framing a long window and the front door of the church.
The threshold, the fascination is still operating ... The height of the walls, the slope of almost 3 meters and the convergence of the walls between the porch and the chancel, accentuates the religious sentiment. Willingness to rise, seeking an absolute quest for serenity ... All symbols are ...
It should not mean forgetting the defensive characteristics of the church. Staircases in the piers, bay shooting, vault supported by the roof of the porch ... recalling that it was also used as a fortress.
The religious wars marked the beginning of its decline ... Revolution and the last hunting monks!
The Association of Friends of Saint Amand de Coly organizes guided tours of the Abbey by appointment during the summer.
