Landmark, it was recognized in 2005 as World Heritage by UNESCO from a list of 23 belfries of Belgium and France.
The Town Hall with its belfry is the subject of a registration as a historic monument since March 4, 2002.
First built in the Middle Ages, the belfry of Armentieres was destroyed by order of Louis XI, before being rebuilt in 1510.
He was then incorporated into the Town Hall in 1724, following extensive work undertaken by the aldermen.
The belfry was then an outward symbol of power and prosperity.
Again destroyed in 1918 during the First World War, the belfry of Armentieres was entirely rebuilt by the architect Louis Cordonnier Marie.
The new building was inaugurated in 1934 after nine years of work.
