Dominant les vieilles maisons de la Viale, deux châteaux médiévaux, longtemps en rivalité, composent la forteresse. Le château inférieur, propriété des évêques de Die en 1320, et le château supérieur nommé Châtelas, propriété des comtes de Valentinois cités en 1210, se partageaient la seigneurie du lieu. Plus bas, l'enceinte du village est reliée au "Grand Manteau", spectaculaire mur-bouclier.
