Surnommé le Vaisseau des Cévennes en raison de sa proue en pierre spectaculaire et unique en Europe, le Château de Portes classé Monument Historique et son col surveillent l’ancien chemin dit de Régordane qu’empruntaient les pèlerins de Saint-Gilles et les Croisés vers la Terre Sainte. Véritable porte d’entrée des Hautes Cévennes au pied du Mont Lozère, il se situe en périphérie du Parc national des Cévennes inscrit en juin 2011 au Patrimoine mondial de l’Humanité et défie plus de 10 siècles d’histoire.
