Website

Built on a Hill Top Vendée, the castle overlooks the town of Pouzauges and a vast panorama. The fortress, built mainly in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, has 12 turns. Dominating the other 11, the magnificent tower is among the most comprehensive and oldest stone dungeons of Poitou. In the fifteenth century, the fortress belonged to Catherine de Thouars and her husband, Gilles de Rais. The lady and her daughter, Marie, made it their primary residence.
