The castle is a Tournel ancient castle in the commune of Saint-Julien-du-Tournel in Lozere (France). Former seat of the barons of Tournel, one of the eight baronies of Gevaudan, it will be destroyed during the wars of religion by the Huguenot troops Matthew Merle.

The castle stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the upper valley of the Lot. Now attached to the commune of Saint-Julien-du-Tournel it is a strategic position, given the possessions of the family of Tournel. Since its towers can be seen easily Mount Lozère, the highest point of the region.
