Château féodal de Rochetaillée

The feudal castle of Rochetaillée, built on a quartz kidney was a fortress which the exact date of foundation is unknown, but the castle was mentioned for the first time in 1173.
The location of this castle is no coincidence because the precipice made it inaccessible north side.
Basically, the building was composed of four towers which are no more than three today.
It is said that this castle is to "limit of the watershed of Europe" or the roof "shed rain water in the two seas" because Janon is a tributary of the Rhone and Furan flows into the Loire ( Furan flows from the south side of the village and is lost in the ocean, the Janon the north side leads to the Mediterranean).

This fort belonged to a particular family Jarez, then to the Linieres and Saint-Germain (15 th century, the lords have created a clean coat of arms in the village). Then some of Mr Badol Dorcieu took possession, followed by Jacques Bernou of Nantes (to 1668) and finally the Baron de Rochetaillée (around 1812).

The castle played an important role at the time of religious wars and struggles between royalists and leaguers. After a siege of 19 days the conspirators seized the castle June 29, 1589 and went into a sorry state.
It should be noted that in 1560, the Calvinists, after several attempts, made themselves masters of the place are also causing major damage, the Earl of Apchon, who was then the owner had fled a leading underground beyond the Janon.
The village was in an amphitheater below the fort and was defended by a wall with large fortified gates in the east and west.
In the 14th century, the inhabitants could take refuge in the castle in case of need, but they had to pay in exchange for a sum to the lord.

A former track indicates that the walls of the house went through Sequestre before crossing the main road then follow the alignment of houses (currently Path Vialle). We see today a corner tower of the old ramparts at the end of this road.

The last restoration of the castle took place in 1998.
