Lac Chambon

63790 CHAMBON SUR LAC

Chambon Lake is a lake of volcanic origin located in the Massif des Monts Dore in the Puy de Dome in Auvergne. There is also a lake of Chambon in the Alps (Isère department) and Lake Chambon in the Creuse.

Chambon lake was formed by the volcano Tartaret who blocked the bed of the Couze Chambon, it is located 877 m above sea level, shallow (4 m), but quite large (60 ha). Its banks are cut, except in the north where the beach has been set for swimming and water activities.

A path can walk around in about an hour. Part of the trail was refurbished in 2006 and portions of piles are used to monitor the lake shore, passing in marshy areas.

North of Lake Chambon stands a needle of rock, old remnant of the volcano the "Dent Marsh", called "Break the Maid"

A legend tells of a young shepherdess, to escape the attentions of the lord, threw herself from the top of this rocky outcrop, rising to nearly 100 m, and miraculously landed unscathed.

It would have boasted of his feat in the village and, to the disbelief of the villagers wanted again, this time would have been crushed to the ground.

Nearby Lake Chambon, there are also ski and snow Chambon Castle Murol.
