Lake Chauvet is a French lake of volcanic origin located in the Massif Central in the Auvergne region, specifically in the department of Puy de Dome, in the chain of Monts Dore, in the town of Picherande.
Located at an altitude of 1176 m, it was formed in the crater of an extinct volcano that is what is known as a maar. Almost perfectly circular in shape, it measures about 600 m in diameter and 86 m deep.
He trained there are about 150 000 years and the surrounding terrain has been eroded over time. It is larger but shallower than its neighbor Lake Pavin.
Bordered on one half of its circumference by a forest (the forest of Montbert), it is about 400 m distant from the main road 203. This lake is managed by a private owner.
