Ce volcan de type strombolien (un cône tronqué surmonté d'une cuvette) culmine à 1175 mètres, il fait face à un autre volcan, le mont Baury sur les flancs duquel se blottit le village d'Allègre.
Le Mont Bar est unique en Europe, c'est en effet le seul volcan de type strombolien qui abrite dans son cratère une tourbière. La formation de celle-ci a été favorisée par le creusement d'un drain en 1821 pour assécher le lac qui se trouvait alors dans son cratère.
