Le Rocher de Sampzon constitue « le phare » de l’Ardèche méridionale. Avec sa silhouette unique en table inclinée, ce curieux rocher culminant à 381 mètres se dresse à la confluence de l’Ardèche, de Labeaume et du Chassezac. Il est de la même origine géologique que la Dent de Rez et le Serre de Tourre voisins, ou le Vercors, les calanques, le Mont Ventoux et les Alpilles : c’est un massif urgonien.
L’ancienne forteresse féodale qui trônait au sommet a été rasée en 1600 et remplacée aujourd’hui par un relais de télévision. L’accès en voiture offre un point de vue exceptionnel de l’Ardèche méridionale, la montagne ardéchoise et par temps clair, les Alpes et le Mont Ventoux.
